OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE
NEW!
Moving day can be a long one and you'll need to be sharp
and full of energy to handle the day. Taking the day off
from work or moving on a weekend will be a big advantage
so you can focus your attention on moving. If you have
children you will probably want to get a babysitter
during the loading and unloading process and you should
keep pets in a room where they are not in the way.
Moving day may seem overwhelming as it sneaks up on you
but there is no need to feel stress. Our helpful tips
will take you through the day, making sure that you
don't miss a beat.
- Clean your house the best you can before the movers arrive.
You will want to search every room and closet, making
sure you are leaving nothing behind. The movers will
contact you at least 24 hours prior to their arrival
time, so this will give you enough time to prepare for
their arrival.
- Be on there when the movers arrive. We highly recommend
that unless is it simply not feasible, you should spend
as much time at your home during the move as possible.
This gives you the maximum control over the actions and
activities of your movers.
- If you can't be present during the move then you will have
to designate a trusted person to be there making
decisions for you. Be sure you're the designated person
is fully aware and informed and the movers are aware
that this person has authority. They may be asked to
sign documents obligating you to charges.
- Turn over keys, garage door remote control devices and
alarm codes to the new owner or real estate agent.
Provide new owners with all warranties and manuals for
the appliances that you are leaving behind.
- Stay home until the last item is packed. Do a final
inspection before the movers leave to make sure that
nothing has been missed and that there are no damages to
any walls, floors, etc. Be sure to check the mover's
inventory and make sure you agree with any notations.
- You may want to take photos of the furniture before it is
packed so that you have photographic proof of your
item's conditions before they were packed and loaded
onto the moving truck. It is your responsibility to see
that all the goods are loaded to your satisfaction.
- You should leave your phone connected throughout moving
day. Pack your home phone in a carry on bag when you
leave and remember to plug it in as soon as you get to
the new home. You should have your new phone company
activate the line the day before you arrive just to be
safe and to ensure you have phone service at your new
residence.
- Provide the movers with clear directions to your new home.
Be sure to indicate if there are any challenges in
getting the moving truck to your new home as this may
require the moving company to schedule different
equipment to transport your items to your home. You
should also provide phone numbers where you can be
reached at your new destination, including a cell phone,
if you have one.
- If you wish to have your goods unpacked, you will have to
order this service in advance. Otherwise, it is still
best to be there when the movers are unloading the
truck. Review your floor plan and tell the movers where
to put furniture and appliances.
- When you sign the inventory sheet you are acknowledging
your receipt of all items. It is important to
document the loss or damage of any item on the inventory
sheet. Report this to your customer services
representative ASAP.
- Payment will most likely be required in cash, traveler's
checks, money order or cashier's check. Personal checks
are not normally accepted unless arrangements
were made in advance. If you plan to pay with a credit
card, you will need to confirm in advance that this form
of payment will be accepted by your moving company.
You are required by law to pay upon delivery for
interstate moves.
- Check and make sure that all your utilities in your old
home have been disconnected and all utilities in your
new home have been connected.
- It is advised that you wait 24 hours after delivery to use
stereos, televisions, computers, or other electronic
devices. They may have been exposed to more extreme
temperatures during the move and it is best to let them
adjust to room temperature in order to prevent possible
damages.
While this is a long list of things to keep in mind, the
most important thing is to stay calm and stay cool and
stick to your plan. If you can handle these things, your
move will have a high likelihood of success.
